In order to provide assistance as you begin to consider your Fall 2021 teaching, the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) has updated a number of areas on the Teach Anywhere website. These updates focus primarily on resources meant to assist with the transition of remote course materials to either in-person/hybrid instruction or fully online instruction. This includes lists of webinars, workshops, one-on-one consultations, web resources, and more. Information about DTEI summer programs is listed below. To enable you to request support for this summer and beyond, we have created two different surveys/forms:
- DTEI Summer 2021 Support Request Form: This can be used to request support from DTEI in the form of workshops, faculty working groups, instructional designer consultations and DTEI Graduate Fellows.
- Classroom Technology Resource Survey: This can be used to provide feedback on additional resources that may be necessary for Fall 2021 and beyond in the general areas of classroom training, technology and software.

In preparation for our return to campus in Fall 2021, the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation will be organizing a variety of faculty development opportunities. These include workshops, faculty working groups, and access to both DTEI Graduate Fellows and instructional designers. These programs will enable faculty to leverage their remote teaching materials for both in-person and online instructional delivery in the 2021-2022 academic year.
DLI 2021: Workshops on Flipped/Hybrid Course Design
The Digital Learning Institute (DLI) was created to support UCI faculty with inclusive course design and digital active learning enhancement. The theme of the 2021 DLI will be “Flipped/Hybrid Course Design” supporting both in-person and online instruction.
DLI workshops are scheduled on Monday and Thursday from August 9 to October 7. All UCI faculty are welcome to attend any number of workshops. The DLI certification is not a requirement for workshop participation. These workshops are geared towards assisting faculty in transitioning their remote courses to a flipped, hybrid or in-person format in preparation for post-pandemic teaching. They are also aimed at faculty interested in leveraging their remote course materials to generate Senate-approved online courses. Faculty who attend at least five workshops and submit the course planning worksheet for Fall 2021 will receive a DLI 2021 Certificate for Flipped/Hybrid Teaching.
DTEI Faculty Working Groups
Get ready for fall quarter with the support of colleagues and guidance from the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation! Working groups are made up of 4-5 faculty of similar disciplines and class sizes and meet on a weekly basis. Groups are provided recommendations and goals in designing a hybrid or in-person course for fall as well as meetings with DTEI experts. In addition, we will be highlighting some technology tools to enhance student engagement and success including Perusall, Gradescope, EdPuzzle, Mentimeter, and more!
1. Hybrid Teaching Working Group (4 week program)
This working group is for faculty who will be teaching using a hybrid format during Fall 2021. In this group, we will be going over best practices for balancing in-person and online instruction using synchronous and asynchronous techniques. This includes creating an equitable course structure while maintaining rigor, utilizing Learning Assistants (LAs) to enhance learning, and leveraging technology while promoting student success. Working groups will meet on four consecutive Wednesdays from 12pm-2pm starting July 7th.
2. In-Person Teaching Working Group (4 week program)
This working group is for faculty who will be teaching in-person during Fall 2021. In this group, we will be going over how to leverage your remote teaching materials for in-person instruction. This includes potentially using a flipped classroom format, where the students preview the material before coming to class, freeing up in-class time to go deeper into topics and have more meaningful discussions. Working groups will meet on four consecutive Wednesdays from 12pm-2pm starting August 4th.
Full-scale Online Course Development Service
The Learning Experience and Online Education (LEOE) team at DTEI provides a full-scale online course development service. Faculty wishing to design a brand-new course or transform an existing course for online delivery are encouraged to take advantage of this service and receive online teaching consultation and course development support from the experienced instructional designers and video producers at DTEI. The service is designed based on a cohort model with group meetings and peer working sessions scheduled to support faculty's course development needs during the eight-week course development process. Any UCI faculty planning to teach a full online course in the 2021 - 2022 academic year is welcome to apply for the service. If you are interested in the online course development service, please send an interest form. The Summer 2021 cohort will start from July 19 to September 10, 2021. The DTEI Graduate Fellows Program
The DTEI graduate fellow resources are available to support faculty in preparing for teaching in the 2021-2022 academic year. Service may include:
- General consultation and support for various modes of teaching
- Preparing for on campus in-person instruction or leveraging online assets for hybrid or in-person instruction
- Developing instructional content, assessments, and lecture videos on Canvas
- Optimizing synchronous (Zoom) remote instruction or implementing active learning strategies in the classroom
DTEI Office Hour Consultation
DTEI offers 30-minute one-on-one faculty consultation to support faculty's teaching needs. Feel free to discuss topics related to digital active learning, instructional video/content development, Canvas course development, or anything related to remote/online education, hybrid teaching, or adopting technology to enhance teaching.
